Background and Experience
Dayne Phillips is a proud native of South Carolina. Born and raised in Lexington County, he graduated from Airport High School in 2003 and the University of South Carolina in 2007. He then earned his Juris Doctor degree from from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2010.
During law school, he worked as a law clerk for John Delgado and his interest in criminal defense quickly became his life’s calling. After assisting in several murder trials, this clerkship grew into a passion for challenging the government and defending the underdog. He learned the meaning of zealous advocacy from his mentor, and he is forever grateful.
Dayne began his career as an Assistant Appellate Defender at the South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense. His caseload contained a wide spectrum of appeals, which included drug trafficking, burglary, and murder. He filed over 100 appeals in the South Carolina Court of Appeals and Supreme Court. He also argued in both of this State’s highest courts, obtaining numerous reversals for his clients and creating law that protects the rights of South Carolina citizens.
Dayne then joined the Eleventh Circuit Public Defender’s Office as an Assistant Public Defender. He managed a large and diverse caseload consisting all types of misdemeanors and felonies, which ranged from driving under the influence (DUI) and criminal domestic violence (CDV) to armed robbery and murder. He gained critical trial experience and received not guilty verdicts in several felony trials.
